Spiritual Life

There are many ways to renew your spirit at Christ Church. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to pray during the week or a group with which to share your journey, we hope that you will find what you are looking for in this community. Several offerings are listed below, and we always welcome new ideas for spiritual formation. Contact: Scott Walters or Kate Alexander.

Labyrinth

The labyrinth is a tool for prayer and meditation. It is an ancient symbol that represents wholeness while integrating many levels of symbolism within its sacred geometry. It is a single path leading to the center and back. Many use a three-fold path of meditation and prayer when walking the labyrinth: Entering, Centering and Returning. The labyrinth of Christ Church is a replica of the 12th century stone pattern inlaid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France. The labyrinth is available for use during office hours unless another event is planned.

Compline

Every Sunday evening the Christ Church Compline Choir sings this traditional service of evening prayers in candlelight. The music is unaccompanied chants and motets and lasts 15 – 20 minutes. All are welcome to experience this peaceful and sacred way to begin the week. Click here for more information.

A Quiet Place to Pray

The red doors at the front of the church on Scott Street are open Monday – Friday from 9 to 3. You are welcome to enter the church for a quiet place to pray.

Yoga

The yoga class meets on Mondays & Thursdays at 5:30 at the church. $5 per class. Contact the instructor True.

Education for Ministry

This intensive weekly program is a chance to make significant growth theologically as you reflect on the Bible, church history, and the church’s various theological statements through the centuries. The University of the South has developed materials for the course. A mentor leads discussion of the materials and reflection on how each participant sees God active in his or her daily life. Tuition is $340 per year (there are partial scholarships available), and the class is limited to 12 people. This group meets from September through May. If you want to find out more about the course, visit with Sandra Scoggin or visit EfM at Sewanee.

Pilgrimage Retreats Downtown

Periodically throughout the year, we offer retreat days at the church and the chance to make a spiritual pilgrimage in the heart of downtown Little Rock. For more information, contact Rebecca Alderfer.

Daughters of the King

Daughters of the King is an order for church women who feel called to make a lifetime commitment to God, in a ministry of prayer, service and evangelism. We wear the DOK cross every day as a sign of our commitment. Our chapter at Christ Church is the Advent Chapter. We meet the first Sunday of each month, pray every day, for any and all who request or need prayers and participate in an on-going outreach service project. We are part of a worldwide organization. For additional information, contact Becki Alderfer, President.

Journey Group

This ongoing group meets on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 in the Bishop’s Room to discuss natural spirituality and dream work. Contact: Sandra Smith.

Healing Prayers

Intercessory prayers for healing are offered during the Wednesday Eucharist at 12:05 in the chapel and during the Sunday Eucharist at 10:30 in the transepts during communion.

House of Prayer

The House of Prayer is a joint ministry of the Diocese of Arkansas and St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in West Little Rock. It is interfaith haven, set apart in nature, dedicated to contemplative prayer, meditation and quiet, where all are welcome. For more information, please visit the House of Prayer website or contact Joyce Hardy.

Morning Prayer

The service of Morning Prayer is offered on Fridays at 8:00 am in the Chapel. Other Daily Office services are offered during particular seasons of the church year. Watch the announcements for details.

Spiritual Direction

This art of “holy listening” is the process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey. Spiritual direction helps people tell their sacred stories and discern where God is calling them. It emphasizes growing closer to God and invites a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human. Spiritual direction is not psychotherapy, counseling, or financial planning. It can be a very valuable resource at particular times and junctures in our lives. If you are interested in exploring spiritual direction and finding a spiritual director, please speak with a member of the clergy.
